Capturing peace through the lens

Emerging from isolation, Anonymous finds purpose in their photography
According to an NHS England report one in five young people suffered with a mental health issue in 2023. I am one in five.
I have often felt isolated and left out of the crowd, through school and onwards. The bullying: the whispers, the taunts, the feeling of not quite fitting in — it’s a familiar script, one I’ve grown tired of. But amidst the shadows of loneliness, I found a flicker of light: photography.
From the bustling streets of my home in north London, to the quiet solace of nature’s embrace, photography became my sanctuary. With each click of the shutter, I found peace and a sense of purpose. Cityscapes at dusk with buildings silhouetted against the night sky and the vibrant colours of flowers and plants in nature became my canvas. Each image made me feel contented and inspired, each frame telling a story of resilience and quiet triumph.
Planning a day of photography starts with a glance at the weather forecast and mapping out accessible locations. Armed with my camera and full of hope, I set out on my expeditions. In the heart of the city, amidst the towering skyscrapers and bustling crowds, I find a sense of belonging. Here, behind the lens, I can be my authentic self, capturing moments of beauty in a world that often feels indifferent and at worst threatening.
When I’m in a creative flow I can engage with passers-by who share my curiosity for nature and photography
But it’s not just about the photographs; it’s about the connections forged along the way. As I set up to catch a sunset in time-lapse or frame the perfect close-up of perfect of a crimson flower, I find myself engaging with passers-by who share my curiosity for nature and photography. Sometimes, a chance encounter on the train or bus leads to a conversation that brightens my day.
Since I was 15, photography has been my creative outlet, my lifeline. Through Instagram, I share my journey with a growing community of my fellow enthusiasts. With each like and comment, I’m reminded that I’m not alone, that my voice and my art matter. And, as I continue to represent the beauty of the world around me, I’m reminded that even in the darkest of times, there is always light to be found.
To those of you who are also the one in five, know that hope and help are within reach. Using creativity as an outlet can be a powerful way to understand and express difficult feelings. Don’t hesitate to seek support from resources like YoungMinds, Childline, or The Mix. Remember, you’re not alone, and your journey matters. Even when things seem tough, there is always hope and a way forward.
