Young women discuss how social media, music, and relationships influence their lives
In this episode we start with social media. Over the past five years we’ve seen platforms like TikTok transform how we express ourselves. There’s less holding back, with young people using it to share opinions and have real conversations. But with this change in communication comes an increase in harmful comments, impacting mental health and self-esteem.
We touch on changes we’ve experienced personally as we hit adulthood, becoming more independent, growing in confidence and figuring out who we are. We see that in music too. Artists today, particularly singer-songwriters, opening up about their personal lives, mental health and issues that really matter to us, like female struggles. Take Raye, for example; her music feels relatable, it’s so honest and raw, often exploring themes like mental health, addiction and heartbreak. Listen here to her album: My 21st Century Blues.
We also discuss the changes we’d make if we were raising kids today, particularly around technology. We’d want to limit screen time, knowing how it can take over. Dating has also changed with apps, making it easier to meet people but can challenge our views on loyalty and trust.
And then there’s this question we’ve been reflecting on: why is it still so hard for men to show emotions? Why can’t they express their feelings and cry without being judged? It’s something that strains relationships and has a ripple effect on everyone around them.
