Three friends, Francesco, Ebru and AJ explore the tumultuous nature of relationships

Relationships thrive on trust, whether they’re romantic or platonic. Through sharing our stories, we acknowledge that integrity and trust take time to build, weathering the storms of life and impacting us all in different ways.

We imagine building strong relationships as similar to constructing a house. First, you start with a stable foundation. This provides a secure base that can withstand life’s inevitable challenges without falling apart. Gradually, you build the walls brick by brick, then seal the roof. Finally, you fill the space with treasures and create memories together.

Francesco’s story about losing his best friend
J and I had been best friends since primary school, inseparable through thick and thin. But at 16, everything started to fall apart. My grandad fell seriously ill, and the difficulties that rippled from that overwhelmed my family. I needed time to process my feelings and withdrew from everyone, including J.

J didn’t understand why I was pulling away. He kept trying to reach out, but I just couldn’t bring myself to explain what I was going through. It was all too complex and confusing to put into words. Each time he asked what was wrong, I felt even more suffocated, unable to articulate my need for space and I’d go inwards and quiet. We’d often have horrible arguments, erupting in an outpouring of emotion, that left me feeling even worse.

One day, J confronted me, threatening our friendship. He was frustrated, hurt and insulted by my silence. I could see the pain in his eyes, but the words just wouldn’t come. I couldn’t explain my turmoil, and he mistook my withdrawal for rejection. Feeling unwanted, J stormed off, leaving me alone with my struggles.

Our friendship, once so strong, ended in silence and misunderstanding. I wish I could have told him then, I just needed some time alone to process and heal a little before talking to anyone.

I see this distressing time in my life like a volcano; it’s powerful rumblings threatening to explode at any moment and me having no power to stop it.

The aftershocks burnt me too. I’d lost my best friend and to this day I’m sad about that. I can now see the cracks, the irrevocable damage that was done through not opening up and asking for support. I’m learning to share the difficult stuff on my mind and, little by little, I seek help from my friends.

AJ’s experiences of a breakup
When E and I started dating, I felt like the luckiest guy in the world. She was everything I wanted, funny, smart  and beautiful. We shared so many good times, and I thought we were solid. But everything changed when I found out she was seeing my best friend, T, behind my back.

The betrayal hit me like a truck. Losing E was painful but losing T’s friendship felt even worse. They tried to explain, but I couldn’t listen. I felt utterly broken, my trust shattered by the two people I cared about most.

For months, I struggled to move on. Trusting anyone felt impossible, and I kept to myself, nursing my wounds. Slowly, I began to rebuild my life, focusing on the things I loved and rediscovering who I was without them.

Then I met S. She was different, patient, understanding and incredibly supportive. She listened when I needed to talk and gave me space when I needed it. Over time, she helped me see that not everyone would hurt me like my ex and T did.

It took a while to fully open up, but S never pushed. Her reliability and kindness gradually melted the walls I had built around me. Eventually, our friendship blossomed into something more. S showed me what real love and trust looked like, and for the first time in a long while, I felt very happy.
