Carlotta Midolo reflects on falling in love and romance in the midst of a global pandemic

When I lie still in the grass
I imagine your gaze locked onto mine
The taste of your voice lingers in my mind
I picture our living bodies laying there
I close my eyes and hear your laugh
Our chests rising and falling.

I had a dream last night
That we met in between
You invading my dreams
To sit with me
By a moonlit pond under an old oak tree
Rain was falling.

The night was very much alive.

We approached each other with outstretched hands
Both wanting something unexplainable
As we grew ever closer
The water began to pool into little portals
On the asphalt beneath us
The ground became the sky.

Your fluorescent streetlights illuminate
My heart in a way that even sunlight
Couldn’t attempt to replicate
With every struggling breath
We grew further away from
The singularity of our entire existence.

Became one. Became whole.

Your lips whisper something
No one but you and I will hear
We both let it fly to the stars
It’s not a grand dream
But it’s ours and that’s all that matters
For hours that’s what we do.

We sit among the tides of grass
Wait for the wind’s current
Or the sun’s burning light
Whichever comes first
To bring us back away from our world
Into a lesser reality.

A reality that could never be
As important as you and me.

As the clouds begin to draw in
I’ll still long to see you when we reach the light
Everything we try to say becomes full of immense meaning
I’ve only now understood
Describing it would only lead us to fail
So we stay quiet.

Our I love yous travelling up to the clouds
Let the sky speak for us.
