Poem: Your opinion of me (beyond the surface)

Mya Gosai explores the depths of identity past first impressions

Look beyond the surface
the surface?
Look deeper than the colour of my skin
the surface?
I am more.

What lies beneath?
Youth,
ambition,
intelligence,
power,

my values,      my foundations.
Should my race be your opinion of me?

Where are you from?—
Where am I from?

Look beyond my borders,
my home,
my streets.
Beyond the walls
of my mind,

my consciousness.
Between my experiences,
my people,
what I have made
of myself.

Judge me now,
knowing nothing but what lies
beyond the surface.
Rather,
turn

your unconscious bias to conscious,
inclusivity.

Mya is currently travelling the world on a three-month solo trip. When she returns, she will start an apprenticeship and focus on making a meaningful impact one day at a time!
