Leona Omotayo Frater is enthralled by this year’s Christmas fairytale
RED is Chickenshed’s magical and inspirational interpretation of the classic tale, Little Red Riding Hood. The story brings together hundreds of singers, dancers, performers and musicians to retell the story through themes of bravery, determination, hope and spirit.
Viewers are entered into the Frozen City of Vargheim where we meet many of the familiar characters such as Red (played by Maisie Packer), the Wolf of Vargheim (played by Michael Bossisse) and Grandma (played by Cara McInanny). However, don’t be fooled: expect the unexpected with the character development and the revelations throughout the show.
I absolutely loved the fantasy element incorporated into the tale; giving a well-known tale a freshness and modern twist and keeping viewers within the fictional world.
An unforgettable performance with original music, singing and acting
Magical stones called the Lost Amulets of Time each hold their own great power and connect the three main characters in ways they didn’t know. There is one to restore kindness, one to feed darkness and one to bring balance, each one protected by the Guardians of Time – until one disappeared mysteriously. But not all is what it seems!
Without giving away too much, RED is inspired by folklore and fantasy which truly shines through when watching. The set design, created by their own team, elevates the storytelling and there’s imaginative costume design too.
Hundreds of performers, from young adults to children have come together to create an unforgettable performance with original music, singing and acting which will undoubtedly leave a huge smile on your face.
Year in and year out, Chickenshed never fail to stun me with their unique takes on traditional tales. Their Christmas show is always the highlight of my festive season and it should be yours too!
